Florida Screen Builders Inc. is owned and operated by Rene Cantin.

  • Rene has over 35 years experience, in the construction industry, designing and building both residential and commercial buildings. He also has a background in mechanical and architectual design and metal fabrication.
  • Rene is a State Licensed Building Contractor and he is a master carpenter, cabinet maker and brick mason. He also has a complete working knowledge of all the construction trades. Rene has hosted a radio and TV show (for HGTV) and appeared on other shows dealing with home improvement.
  • Rene started building screen enclosures when he was asked to repair one and noticed how poorly they where being made and saw that there was no way they could withstand hurricane force winds. So he decided that he could make a far superior product using his extensive knowledge of various other construction disciplines and techniques, along with a plain old fashioned "do the job the right way to begin with!" attitude.
When the hurricanes hit South Florida, in 2004 & 2005, Rene's judgment of how screen enclosures where being built at that time was proven right; they could not withstand a high wind load and thousands were destroyed. (Go to our Links Page to obtain more information about how and why screen enclosures failed during the hurricanes). The reality is that the larger screen companies used inferior designs and installation procedures and they knew it or they chose to ignore basic engineering principles in order to save money! The result was a rampant failure during wind speeds that were lower than the structures were supposed to be able to withstand. Some people lost their enclosures during both hurricanes and that should not have occured after the first loss!
  • Rene incorporated many aspects of the structural steel techniques used in commercial buildings as well as the techniques used to fabricate airplanes and race cars. He is an authorized user of the Aluminum Association of Florida Engineering Guide, which is a design manual that has been designated for use by the current Florida Building Code, when designing aluminum structures. The engineering specifications are generally 40% more conservative than standard engineering specifications.

*Note - Airplanes are also made from aluminum, but they have to be both strong and lightweight. There are a lot of similarities between an aluminum structure and an aircraft structure.

Using these various techniques, as well as proper engineering has resulted in screen enclosures that can withstand a 150 mph wind load and look good as well.

Rene's business credos are simple:

"My customers are my future references" and "Build it like I would build for myself or a loved one"
